Garajau Nature Reserve
Founded in 1986, the Garajau Nature Reserve is located on the south coast of Madeira Island, east of the port of Funchal. It is a sub aquatic nature reserve that at times may reach up to a depth of 50 meters when the tides are high. Here you may get a glimpse of large sea life such as the Dusky Grouper (Epinephelus guaza) and other species.
The surfacing of the Manta Ray (Manta birostris) is an annual attraction and it is through their greatness and agility that they are able to impress those watching. Fishing is strictly prohibited within the protected area. Sailing is also very limited as only small boats are allowed to dock on shore. Snorkeling is possible with the appropriate equipment which is provided.
