Selvagens Islands Nature Reserve

Selvagem Pequena
Selvagem Pequena

Of the two groups of islands that the Selvagens Islands are composed of, the Selvagem Grande, Selvagem Pequena and Ilhéu de Fora are of greater importance.

Located at approximately 180 miles south of Madeira Island, these islands are the furthest in terms of southern location in all of the Portuguese territory.

The Selvagens Islands Nature Reserve was founded in 1971 and is one of the first nature reserves in Portugal. It is the only Portuguese nature reserve that has been granted the European Diploma of Protected Areas by the European Council.

The Selvagem Pequena and Ilhéu de Fora are both intact and unique worlds of plant life thanks to the great climatic conditions and the fact that herbivores never existed or have been implemented on the islands. Of the 90 species of plants found on these wild islands, 10 are endemic. The islands are known as a seabird sanctuary as several species nest on these islands.
