A Magical Christmas...
Christmas time in Madeira Island is truly a festival of lights, colour, sound and aroma! From Funchal to even the most remote villages of the island, locals work together since November in preparation for the most festive time of the year.
Funchal literally a stage of lights! Downtown Funchal is filled with people, folkclore presentations, concerts, food and beverage stands and nativity scenes.
December 23rd is the market night, where the “Mercado dos Lavradores” and the streets surrounding the market transform into one huge street party. Thousands of people get together at night, some to buy groceries for their Christmas feasts, others to get together with friends. The popular “carne de vinha d´alhos” (Pork marinated in white and garlic) sandwich.
Christmas celebrations in Madeira Island commence in early December and end on January 6th, Wise Men / Three Kings day.
