Arco da Calheta is one of the most ancient towns of the island. There once existed a significant sugar cane plantation belonging to an aristocratic family – The “De Andrade”.
Estreito da Calheta
Located at about 400 meters above sea level is the village of Estreito da Calheta. Most homes in this village have been built among vineyards and banana plantations.
It is a warm, welcoming parish, directed to agriculture, and is betting strong on rural tourism. One of the places of historical interest is the sixteenth century Chapel of the Magi, Capela dos Reis Magos.
Thanks to its mild climate, this parish is one of the most sought over holiday destination, especially in the winter months. Estreito da Calheta is also a good starting point for hiking.
