Calheta Village
Calheta, the most important town in southwestern Madeira, is known for its warmth and sun filled days.
Not too long ago, the town of Calheta was completely renovated to create a much needed leisure area for both locals and tourists. This renovation included the insertion of a man-made golden sand beach, a marina and restaurants. Tourism is the main focus in Calheta as many locals depend on it for income.
Hotel Calheta beach is an oceanfront 4 star hotel with direct access to the beach and is popular among tourists. Nearby the hotel is a supermarket and some small shops.
Many years ago, there was a significant acreage of sugar cane which is clearly visible today from the beach as the ruins of a sugar cane mill still stand. Higher up, near the church, one of the factories is still active, producing honey and brandy.
Calheta offers a wide range of long walking paths in a Natural Park that is protected by UNESCO.
