Camara de Lobos

Câmara de Lobos is an attractive village by the sea whose main activity is fishing. Upon arriving at the village you will find many small colourful boats in the bay just waiting for fishermen to take them out to sea. Children and adults socialize in the narrow streets, a place where most of their time is spent.

It was here that discoverer, João Gonçalves Zarco, found many sea lions who sought shelter in these rocky shores. Thanks to this event the village was named “Câmara de Lobos” meaning “Municipal chamber of Sea Lions”. In1420, by order of João Gonçalves Zarco the Chapel of Nossa Senhora dos Pescadores (Our Lady of Fishermen) was built by the port. In 1723, the small chapel of baroque style was completely remodeled, retaining the tower´s original style.

The village recalls with tremendous pride the days when the inspiration for Winston Churchill´s paintings were the stunning landscapes of Câmara de Lobos. Some of his paintings may be viewed today in his former home in Kent (England).

In this village, facing the sun, you can see Cat fish drying, also known as the “cod fish” of Câmara de Lobos.

Right on the harbour is a small fish market.

Virtually around almost every corner is a snack-bar or restaurant.
