Canhas
The community owes its name Canhas one of its first settlers, João de Canha, who became known in history as the squire of D.Diogo, the Duke of Viseu.
Canhas was founded on January 30th, 1557 by royal decree, but a little later, on 10 July 1578, was appointed as a community.
This typical Madeiran community has much to offer in terms of culture and history. Through Canhas, Paúl da Serra can quickly be reached and it is here where the most important streams and watercourses are located, which are used to irrigate the fields. The vast green highlands, where mountains meet eachother invite you on a perfect walk. The inhabitants of Canhas are mainly engaged in agriculture.
