Rays of sunshine bathing ocean waves, sea cliffs and a prominent peak are a common sight in the town of Ponta do Sol. The name Ponta do Sol, meaning Sunny Point, derives from the many hours of sunshine and for it being one of the sunniest spots on the island. Ponta do Sol´s main agricultural product in the 15th century was sugar, which, brought great prosperity and development to this town. Today, it focuses mainly on banana plantations. Today Ponta do Sol is a hot destination spot for new visitors. This town also prides itself in being the birthplace of the grandfather of the American writer "John Dos Passos' .
