Diving
Dive in to Porto Santo´s underwater paradise…
The golden island has ideal conditions to practice diving all year round. Porto Santo´s diving centre is located in Vila Baleira. Normally this activity is conducted from a boat, but, in case bad weather does not allow the boat to set sail, the diving activity will still continue, but from the shore.
You may find butterfly rays, barracuda, grouper, sea bass and other marine species that are abundant there.
Currently there are 23 different diving sites that are regularly visited by lovers of this sport. Dive boats take about 10 to 90 minutes out at sea. Almost all the diving sites are located on the south coast and include the uninhabited rocky islands: the Baixo islet and Cima islet (Ilhéu de Baixo and Ilhéu de cima). In further locations, two dives are conducted daily.
The “Madeirense”, a ship sunken in 2000 in order to create a type of artificial reef, is now home to many marine species and is one of the most preferred locations by many for diving. In recent years, the “madeirense” has been visited by hundreds of divers, thus making it one of the most potential diving sites in the world.
